Interview with Benazir Bhutto

YaleGlobal Online is carrying an interview (full transcript)with Benazir Bhutto, on her (not so) secret discussions with Musharraf earlier this year. For Indians it makes interesting reading on two counts. First, she talks of abandoning a policy of “strategic depth” in Pakistan, as a hedge against Indian influence. Instead: She said that she rejected the [...]

The Case to Stay in Iraq – From India’s Partition

Sixty years after the British created India and Partition, the Irish and British are reflecting on what they left behind. No doubt, there is much self-congratulation amongst the English for a successful India – though their positive legacy is highly dubious. But The Independent (from Ireland) sees wider implications of the history that followed partition: The [...]

Inequality in the US: India’s Choice

I have written a lot recently on inequality – in India and in Asia. The basic point has been the same – that inequality is bad from a social and moral point, but (as the ADB argues in its report on Asia) also from an economic point of view. In the same vien I pulled [...]

India’s Miracle: More on the India Story

I am usually loathe to repeat stories found elsewhere, but this one is certainly worth mentioning. The British magazine New Statesman has a special issue on India (courtesy New Economist). Titled, India’s Miracle, it has five stories – none of which probably break significant new ground for the accomplished reader. That said, they are each in [...]

[...]

India Nuggets: Readings from the Brookings Institution

On March 8, The Brookings Institution hosted an event titled Is India’s High Growth Sustainable. I could not attend as I live a quarter of a world away, but the even announcement also included some other interesting articles, worth checking out: Energy Security Series: India (full PDF here): A rather long report on the use and [...]

India’s Capital Markets: Deutsche Bank releases paper

Another bank, another paper. Deutsche Bank Research has released a 16 page report on India’s capital markets. It has a lot of numbers from a lot of places, and may not interest everyone. But it presents some interesting observations on India’s growth and development. Credit growth has surged at 35% year on year in 2004-05, [...]

Foreign Policy on India: Dispelling Myths with Half Truths

The Foreign Policy is carrying a web exclusive by Barbara Crossette (and blog entry) on what is wrong with India. According the the FP blog, Ms. Crossette: backed up her argument with lots of data showing that, for now, India’s vaunted rise, and its celebrated tolerance, are more hype than reality when it comes to [...]
