Kenya’s Drought Update

I mentioned previously the drought in Kenya. Well, things are worse than I had anticipated. Living in Nairobi, it is easy to forget about it, as the city is still very green. But now the city too is having to deal with the challenge. This past week, they started rationing water in the many apartment complexes. Some of the restaurants no longer have fresh running water in the restrooms, installed water storage tanks instead.

With the short rains (that usually occur in Oct-Nov) failing this year, this is the worst drought in 30 years. And things will get worse, before they get better. Even if the long rains (in March-April) are plentiful, the crops will take 1-2 years to recover.
